โ€œYour Last Breath on Earth Will Be Your First Breath in Heaven or in Hellโ€

(A Dispensational Understanding of Eternal Destiny)

INTRODUCTION:

Every soul will one day take their final breath. That moment is not an endโ€”itโ€™s a transition. According to Scripture, death is not annihilation but separation: the soul departs from the body and immediately enters eternity (2 Corinthians 5:8; Luke 16:22โ€“23).

In this message, we will discover from a Dispensationalist perspective what happens the moment you dieโ€”depending on whether you are in Christ or without Christโ€”and how your eternal destiny is determined by what you have believed in this dispensation of grace.

1. THE CERTAINTY OF DEATH

(Hebrews 9:27; Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:22)

Death is universalโ€”it comes to all because of Adamโ€™s sin.

A. The Reality of the Curse โ€“ Death entered through one man (Romans 5:12). Every man is born dying because of the Fall.

B. The Result of Corruption โ€“ โ€œIn Adam all dieโ€ (1 Corinthians 15:22). Our mortal bodies bear the mark of sinโ€™s decay.

C. The Reminder of Consequence โ€“ Death proves sinโ€™s penalty (Romans 6:23). Physical death pictures the spiritual separation sin brings.

Dispensational Note: Death has reigned since Adam, but in this Age of Grace, Christ offers eternal life as a free gift to all who believe the gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1โ€“4.

2. THE CONDITION OF THE SOUL

(Ecclesiastes 12:7; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23)

When the body dies, the soul lives on.

A. The Separation of Body and Spirit โ€“ The dust returns to the earth, but the spirit returns to God (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

B. The Security of the Believer โ€“ The believer is โ€œpresent with the Lordโ€ (2 Corinthians 5:8). No waiting, no purgatory.

C. The Suffering of the Unbeliever โ€“ The lost immediately open their eyes in torment (Luke 16:23).

Dispensational Note: Unlike Israelโ€™s prophetic hope of resurrection to inherit the Kingdom, the Body of Christ has a heavenly hope immediately after death.

3. THE CHOICE OF DESTINY

(John 3:18; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8โ€“9)

Your eternal destination is determined in this lifeโ€”by belief or unbelief in Christโ€™s finished work.

A. The Basis of Salvation โ€“ Faith in Christโ€™s death, burial, and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3โ€“4).

B. The Barrier of Sin โ€“ Without Christ, sin condemns the soul forever (John 3:18).

C. The Blessing of Grace โ€“ Eternal life is a gift, not a wage (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8โ€“9).

Dispensational Note: The message of salvation today is not the gospel of the Kingdom, but the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24).

4. THE COMFORT OF HEAVEN

(2 Corinthians 5:8; Colossians 3:1โ€“4; 1 Thessalonians 4:13โ€“18)

For the believer, death is not a defeatโ€”itโ€™s a departure to glory.

A. The Presence of Christ โ€“ โ€œTo depart and be with Christ is far betterโ€ (Philippians 1:23).

B. The Peace of Consciousness โ€“ No pain, sorrow, or sin (Revelation 21:4).

C. The Promise of Continuation โ€“ We await glorified bodies at the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:16โ€“17).

Dispensational Note: The believerโ€™s hope is heavenly, not earthly. The Body of Christ looks upward to the Rapture, not to a Kingdom on earth.

5. THE CONDEMNATION OF HELL

(Luke 16:23; Revelation 20:11โ€“15; Matthew 25:46)

For the unbeliever, death is immediate judgment and eternal separation from God.

A. The Conscious Torment โ€“ โ€œIn hell he lift up his eyes, being in tormentsโ€ (Luke 16:23).

B. The Complete Darkness โ€“ Separated from Godโ€™s light forever (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

C. The Certain Duration โ€“ โ€œThe smoke of their torment ascendeth up for everโ€ (Revelation 14:11).

Dispensational Note: Hell today holds the unsaved dead awaiting the Great White Throne Judgmentโ€”distinct from the judgment seat of Christ for believers.

6. THE COMING OF THE LORD

(1 Thessalonians 4:16โ€“17; 1 Corinthians 15:51โ€“52; Titus 2:13)

Thereโ€™s a future event for all who are in Christโ€”the Pre Tribulation Rapture!

A. The Sudden Sound โ€“ โ€œThe trumpet shall soundโ€ (1 Corinthians 15:52).

B. The Supernatural Summons โ€“ โ€œThe dead in Christ shall rise firstโ€ (1 Thessalonians 4:16).

C. The Spiritual Separation โ€“ The Body of Christ will meet Him in the air, not on earth.

Dispensational Note: The Pre Tribulation Rapture is mystery truth revealed only to Paul (1 Corinthians 15:51), distinct from Christโ€™s second coming to earth in prophecy.

7. THE CONSOLATION OF ETERNITY

(2 Timothy 4:8; Ephesians 2:7; Revelation 21:3โ€“4)

For the saved, eternity is endless fellowship and fullness of joy.

A. The Crown of Righteousness โ€“ Reward for faithfulness (2 Timothy 4:8).

B. The Communion with Christ โ€“ โ€œSo shall we ever be with the Lordโ€ (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

C. The Celebration of Grace โ€“ God will show โ€œthe exceeding riches of His graceโ€ forever (Ephesians 2:7).

Dispensational Note: The eternal purpose of God for the Body of Christ is heavenly reign and gloryโ€”not Israelโ€™s earthly kingdom.

CONCLUSION:

Beloved, your last breath is not your endโ€”itโ€™s your entrance. If you have trusted Christโ€™s finished work, heaven is your home. But if you have rejected the gospel of grace, eternal separation awaits.

> โ€œBehold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.โ€ โ€” 2 Corinthians 6:2
