WHY HALLOWEEN IS EVIL?

Ephesians 5:11 – “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

INTRODUCTION:

Every October, the world celebrates Halloween, a night filled with costumes, ghosts, monsters, and mockery of death. Yet for the believer, this day is not innocent fun — it is spiritual deception.

From a Dispensationalist standpoint, we live in the dispensation of grace, where Satan still operates as “the god of this world” (2 Cor. 4:4), deceiving through darkness, fear, and false religion.

Halloween glorifies what Christ died to defeat — death, demons, and darkness.

We must therefore discern the times (Eph. 5:15–16) and depart from every appearance of evil (1 Thess. 5:22).

POINT 1: THE PAGAN ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN – ITS CORRUPTED ROOTS

> Deut. 18:10–12; Jer. 10:2–3

A. The Cultic Beginning – From Pagan Beliefs

Halloween stems from the Celtic festival of Samhain, worshiping spirits of the dead.

God forbids communion with spirits (Deut. 18:10–12).

Dispensationally, such rituals belong to the times of ignorance before Christ (Acts 17:30).

B. The Catholic Blending – From Pagan to Pseudo-Christian

“All Hallows’ Eve” was Rome’s attempt to merge paganism with Christianity.

This mixture of light and darkness opposes Paul’s Gospel (2 Cor. 6:14).

C. The Cultural Binding – From Ancient to Modern

Today’s Halloween still celebrates death, demons, and darkness — the same roots repackaged.

Gal. 4:9–10 warns against returning to “weak and beggarly elements.”

POINT 2: THE POWER OF DARKNESS – ITS CONTINUING REALITY

> Eph. 6:12; Col. 1:13

A. The Spiritual Warfare – Satanic Influence

Behind costumes and candles are unseen principalities and powers (Eph. 6:12).

Halloween mocks spiritual warfare that’s very real in this age.

B. The Sinister Deception – Satanic Imitation

Satan transforms himself into an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14).

The enemy disguises evil as entertainment.

C. The Saving Deliverance – Spiritual Illumination

Believers are delivered from darkness (Col. 1:13).

Dispensationally, we live under grace and truth, not fear and darkness.

POINT 3: THE PROMOTION OF DEATH – ITS CELEBRATED SYMBOLISM

> Rom. 6:23; Heb. 2:14–15

A. The Mocking of Death – Satan’s Entertainment

Skulls, ghosts, and graves celebrate what Christ destroyed (1 Cor. 15:54–57).

B. The Memory of Deliverance – Salvation’s Emphasis

Christ conquered death (Heb. 2:14–15).

We are not to imitate death, but announce resurrection!

C. The Meaning of Life – Spiritually Enlightened

Paul’s message is life and immortality through the Gospel (2 Tim. 1:10).

Halloween replaces that message with fear and foolishness.

POINT 4: THE PRACTICE OF DECEPTION – ITS CORRUPTING INFLUENCE

> John 8:44; 2 Thess. 2:10–11

A. The Father of Lies – Satan’s Identity

The devil is the father of lies (John 8:44).

Halloween normalizes deception — costumes, disguises, and false images.

B. The Folly of Likeness – Satan’s Imitation

People dress like demons and witches, blurring holiness and horror.

God calls His people to be distinct (Lev. 20:26; Rom. 12:2).

C. The Freedom of Light – Saint’s Integrity

Truth sets believers free (John 8:32).

In the dispensation of grace, truth, not trickery, defines our testimony.

POINT 5: THE PERVERSION OF INNOCENCE – ITS DANGEROUS APPEAL

> Prov. 14:12; Matt. 18:6

A. The Deception of Entertainment – Sin in Disguise

Satan makes sin look fun — “There is a way that seemeth right…” (Prov. 14:12).

Candy cannot sweeten corruption.

B. The Defilement of Children – Souls in Danger

Children are introduced to spirits, fear, and witchcraft.

Matt. 18:6 warns against offending “one of these little ones.”

C. The Duty of the Church – Saints in Defense

We must guard our homes, teach truth, and expose evil (Eph. 5:11).

Grace believers stand as ambassadors of light, not participants in darkness.

POINT 6: THE PROFIT OF THE WORLD – ITS COMMERCIAL MANIPULATION

> 1 Tim. 6:10; 1 John 2:15–17

A. The Greed of Men – Material Motivation

Billions are spent glorifying evil.

The love of money drives this darkness (1 Tim. 6:10).

B. The God of Mammon – Material Idolatry

The world serves mammon, not the Master (Matt. 6:24).

Satan uses consumerism to enslave hearts.

C. The Grace of Moderation – Moral Maturity

Believers must set their affection above (Col. 3:2).

We’re called to contentment, not conformity.

POINT 7: THE PROCLAMATION OF TRUTH – ITS COUNTER MESSAGE

> Rom. 1:16; 2 Cor. 4:5–6

A. The Gospel of Grace – God’s Light

The answer to darkness is the light of the glorious gospel (2 Cor. 4:4–6).

Preach Christ, not costumes.

B. The Glory of the Lord – God’s Life

Our message is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Col. 1:27).

His light dispels the world’s lies.

C. The Goal of the Believer – God’s Laborers

We are ambassadors, not audience members (2 Cor. 5:20).

Stand separated, shining with truth and grace.

CONCLUSION:

Halloween is not harmless — it is hellish.
It glorifies death, darkness, and devils, all of which Christ has already defeated.
Under the dispensation of grace, we are to walk as children of light (Eph. 5:8) — not celebrate the works of darkness.

Let us reject the world’s deception and redeem the time, using every opportunity to share the light of the Gospel of Christ.

CALL TO ACTION:

Refuse to fellowship with darkness.
Replace Halloween with holiness.
Reflect the light of Christ in a dark world.

> “Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day.” — 1 Thess. 5:5
