WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM THE TOWER OF BABEL?

(Genesis 11:1–9)

INTRODUCTION

The Tower of Babel is more than a historical event—it is a vivid demonstration of what happens when mankind rejects God’s revelation and establishes his own system of righteousness, unity, and religion. In Dispensational truth, Babel marks the end of the Dispensation of Human Government and reveals the root problems of man: pride, rebellion, and independence from God.

As we study Babel, we discover lessons for today’s world—where humanity still builds systems, religions, and movements without God, and where confusion reigns when the Word of God is rejected.

THE PERVERSION OF HUMAN UNITY

(Man united in rebellion)

A. Unified in Defiance — Gen. 11:1–2

One language, one speech, but one sinful intention.

B. United in Disobedience — Gen. 11:4

They gathered centrally when God commanded them to scatter.

C. Universal in Depravity — Rom. 3:10–12

Human unity without God always produces collective corruption.

THE PRIDE OF HUMAN AMBITION

(Man attempting self-exaltation)

A. Arrogant Aspirations — Gen. 11:4

“Let us build… let us make us a name.”

B. Attempted Ascension — Isa. 14:13–14

Satan sought the same: self-elevation to heaven.

THE PRESUMPTION OF HUMAN RELIGION

They made bricks—a manmade substitute for God’s materials.

They established their own righteousness.

C. Human Imitation — Col. 2:8

Religion imitates God but originates from man’s wisdom.

THE PREVENTION OF DIVINE INTERVENTION

(God halts mankind’s self-destruction)

Man tries to go up; God must come down.

B. God Confronts Sin — Ps. 94:10

God examines and corrects human rebellion.

C. God Controls History — Acts 17:26

God sets nations and boundaries.

THE PUNISHMENT OF CONFUSION

(God confuses what man glorifies)

A. Confounded Speech — Gen. 11:7

The very unity they trusted became confusion.

B. Chaotic Scattering — Gen. 11:8

Their rebellion dispersed them.

C. Consequences Continued — 1 Cor. 14:33

God is not the author of confusion—man is.

THE PATTERN OF HUMAN FAILURE

Instead of righteous rule, man created corrupt religion.

The gospel of grace is God’s answer today.

CONCLUSION

The Tower of Babel teaches that man’s unity without God produces rebellion, religion, and ruin. Every human attempt to replace God results in confusion. Yet God’s response is always grace—moving forward His purpose, culminating in the revelation of the Mystery to Paul and the formation of the Body of Christ.
