THREE THINGS TO DIE DAILY:
LUST OF THE FLESH, LUST OF THE EYES, PRIDE OF LIFE
INTRODUCTION
The Christian life is a daily death โ not physical death, but death to the old nature. Paul said, โI die dailyโ (1 Corinthians 15:31). While our salvation is complete and secure in this dispensation of grace, our walk requires continual crucifixion of the flesh. The world, the flesh, and the devil constantly wage war against the believer (Galatians 5:17).
The apostle John summarizes these three enemies in one verse: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). These are the same temptations Satan used in Eden and the wilderness. Every day, the believer must decide: Who will rule โ the flesh or the Spirit?
Today, let us see three things we must die to daily.
POINT 1 โ DIE TO THE LUST OF THE FLESH
(Galatians 5:16โ17)
The flesh is the old Adamic nature that desires sinful satisfaction.
1. Sinful Desires โ The flesh lusteth against the Spirit (Galatians 5:17).
2. Sensual Distractions โ Works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19).
3. Selfish Decisions โ Serving self instead of Savior (Philippians 2:21).
4. Secret Deeds โ Hidden sins of the flesh (Ephesians 5:12).
5. Slavery to Passions โ Yielding members to sin (Romans 6:12โ13).
6. Spiritual Deadness โ Carnally minded is death (Romans 8:6).
7. Scriptural Discipline โ Crucify the flesh daily (Galatians 5:24).
Dispensational Insight: The believer in this age is not under law but under grace (Romans 6:14), yet grace teaches us to deny ungodliness (Titus 2:11โ12).
POINT 2 โ DIE TO THE LUST OF THE EYES
(1 John 2:16)
The eyes are the gateway of greed, coveting, and worldly craving.
1. Covetous Cravings โ Achan saw, then sinned (Joshua 7:21).
2. Corrupt Curiosity โ Eve saw the fruit was pleasant (Genesis 3:6).
3. Captivated Attention โ David saw Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:2โ4).
4. Consuming Avarice โ Beware of covetousness (Luke 12:15).
5. Compromised Affection โ Demas loved this world (2 Timothy 4:10).
6. Carnal Attraction โ Looking at temporal things (2 Corinthians 4:18).
7. Christlike Alignment โ Set your affection above (Colossians 3:1โ2).
Dispensational Insight: Today, Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4:4), but he distracts the eyes of believers by worldliness.
POINT 3 โ DIE TO THE PRIDE OF LIFE
(Proverbs 16:18)
Pride is the elevation of self above God and above others.
1. Arrogant Attitude โ Pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18).
2. Ambitious Ascension โ Lucifer exalted himself (Isaiah 14:12โ14).
3. Applause Addiction โ Seeking glory of men (John 12:43).
4. Authority Abuse โ Diotrephes loved preeminence (3 John 9).
5. Achievement Assurance โ Trusting in self (Luke 18:11โ12).
6. Acknowledgment Avoidance โ Not giving God glory (Acts 12:21โ23).
7. Apostleโs Admission โ Paul said, โWhen I am weak, then am I strongโ (2 Corinthians 12:10).
Dispensational Insight: Pride is behind every rejection of Paulโs gospel, because pride resists grace and trusts in human righteousness (Romans 10:3).
CONCLUSION
Every believer must die daily โ not physically, but spiritually โ to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
We cannot defeat these in our own strength. But in this dispensation of grace, the Holy Spirit indwells and empowers us to walk in victory (Galatians 5:25).
If you donโt die to these three things dailyโฆ they will live in you daily.
CALL TO ACTION
Kill the flesh โ Walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).
Guard the eyes โ Fix your gaze on Christ (Hebrews 12:2).
Crush the pride โ Humble yourself under Godโs mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6).
Choose daily death so you may walk in daily victory.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The flesh must be crucified.
The eyes must be cleansed.
The pride must be crushed.
Grace must be applied.
Scripture must be obeyed.
The Spirit must be followed.
Christ must be exalted.
