SPIRITUAL MAN VS. CARNAL MAN

(Living by the Spirit or Living by the Flesh)
1 Corinthians 2:14–3:3 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

Many believers are saved by grace, yet not all believers are spiritually mature. Paul clearly distinguishes between the Spiritual Man and the Carnal Manβ€”not to question salvation, but to expose condition, conduct, and growth in the Christian life.

Carnality does not cancel salvation,
but it cripples spiritual effectiveness and reward.
Rightly divided Scripture shows that this struggle applies to Church Age believers, not Israel under the Law.

SOURCE β€” Who Controls the Life
Romans 8:9; Galatians 5:16
Spiritual Man: Governed by the Spirit
Carnal Man: Governed by the Flesh

A. Spirit-Led Control – Walking in dependence (Rom 8:14)
B. Self-Led Conflict – Flesh dominating decisions (Rom 7:18)
C. Supremacy Revealed – One always rules (Gal 5:17)
Dispensational Insight: The Spirit indwells all believers, but only controls yielded believers.

SIGHT β€” How Truth Is Perceived
1 Corinthians 2:12–14

A. Spiritual Discernment – Understands revealed truth
B. Sensual Blindness – Cannot grasp spiritual things
C. Scriptural Dependence – Relies on God’s Word, not feelings
Spiritual men compare spiritual things with spiritual.

SUSTENANCE β€” What Feeds the Soul
1 Corinthians 3:1–2; Hebrews 5:12–14

A. Milk for Infants – Carnal diet
B. Meat for Maturity – Spiritual growth
C. Measure of Growth – Appetite reveals condition
Carnality is prolonged infancy.

SEPARATION β€” What Marks Their Walk
Galatians 5:19–23

A. Fleshly Works – Evident sins
B. Fruit of the Spirit – Christlike character
C. Functional Difference – Life shows who leads
Not perfectionβ€”but direction.

SELF-FOCUS β€” Who Gets the Glory
Philippians 2:3–5; Romans 12:3

A. Carnal Pride – Self-promotion
B. Spiritual Humility – Christ-exaltation
C. Scriptural Mindset – Mind of Christ
Carnality always magnifies β€œme.”

SERVICE β€” How Ministry Is Done
1 Corinthians 3:12–15

A. Wood, Hay, Stubble – Flesh-driven works
B. Gold, Silver, Precious Stones – Spirit-driven service
C. Judgment Revealed – Fire tests motive
Saved soulsβ€”different rewards.

STRIFE β€” What Causes Division
1 Corinthians 3:3–4

A. Envy – Comparison
B. Strife – Competition
C. Sects – Personality worship
Carnality divides what Christ unified.

STABILITY β€” How Trials Are Handled
Romans 8:18; 2 Corinthians 4:16–18

A. Carnal Reaction – Complaining
B. Spiritual Perspective – Eternal view
C. Steadfast Endurance – Hope-filled living
Spiritual men see beyond the moment.

SUBMISSION β€” Who Rules Daily Choices
Romans 6:11–13; Galatians 2:20

A. Yielded Members – Instruments of righteousness
B. Crucified Self – Christ living through us
C. Conscious Choice – Daily surrender
Spirituality is not automaticβ€”it is intentional.

CONCLUSION

Both the Spiritual Man and the Carnal Man are saved, but they live on two different planes:
One walks in power
The other lives in defeat
One builds for eternity
The other wastes opportunity
God’s desire is not just that we be in Christ, but that Christ be formed in us.

CALL TO ACTION

Examine your walk (2 Cor 13:5)
Renew your mind daily (Rom 12:2)
Yield to the Spirit (Gal 5:16)
Live for eternal reward (1 Cor 9:24–27)
Choose spirituality over carnalityβ€”every single day.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Carnality delays growth
Spirituality displays Christ
Salvation is freeβ€”but spiritual maturity is cultivated

β€œWalk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:16 (KJV)
