SALVATION BY GRACE DOES NOT EXCUSE SIN

Romans 6:1–2; Titus 2:11–12

INTRODUCTION

One of the most common accusations against grace preaching is this:

β€œIf salvation is by grace alone, then people can live however they want.”

The Apostle Paul faced the same charge. His response was not to water down graceβ€”but to explain grace correctly. Grace does not excuse sin; grace empowers separation from sin. In the Dispensation of Grace, believers are not motivated by fear of hell or law-keeping, but by identity in Christ.

Romans 6:1–2; Ephesians 2:8–10

THE FOUNDATION OF GRACE

Grace saves completelyβ€”but purposefully.

A. Grace Is God’s Gift β€” Not earned by works (Ephesians 2:8–9)

B. Grace Is Grounded in the Cross β€” Christ paid fully (Romans 3:24)

C. Grace Is Given with Purpose β€” Created unto good works (Ephesians 2:10)

Ephesians 2:8–10; Romans 3:24

THE FALSE CONCLUSION ABOUT GRACE

Misunderstanding leads to abuse.

A. Carnal Question Raised β€” β€œShall we continue in sin?” (Romans 6:1)

B. Corrupt Reasoning Exposed β€” Using grace as cover (Jude 4)

C. Clear Rejection Declared β€” β€œGod forbid!” (Romans 6:2)

Romans 6:1–2; Jude 4

THE FREEDOM FROM SIN’S DOMINION

Grace breaks sin’s power, not excuses it.

A. Sin No Longer Reigns β€” Under grace, not law (Romans 6:14)

B. Self Crucified with Christ β€” Old man judged (Romans 6:6)

C. Spirit Enables Victory β€” Walk after the Spirit (Galatians 5:16)

Romans 6:6, 14; Galatians 5:16

THE FUNCTION OF THE NEW IDENTITY

Grace gives a new position.

A. In Christ Position β€” Seated heavenly (Ephesians 2:6)

B. New Creature Principle β€” Old things passed (2 Corinthians 5:17)

C. New Master Present β€” Servants of righteousness (Romans 6:18)

Ephesians 2:6; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 6:18

THE FORMATION OF GODLY LIVING

Grace trains us how to live.

A. Grace Teaches Denial β€” Ungodliness rejected (Titus 2:12)

B. Grace Trains Discipline β€” Sober, righteous living (Titus 2:12)

C. Grace Targets Godliness β€” Daily conduct changed (Romans 12:1)

Titus 2:11–12; Romans 12:1

THE FEAR OF MISPLACED MOTIVATION

We don’t obey to stay saved.

A. Not Law-Based Fear β€” Law produces bondage (Galatians 5:1)

B. Not Works-Based Assurance β€” Grace secures salvation (Romans 8:38–39)

C. Love-Based Service β€” Constrained by Christ (2 Corinthians 5:14)

Galatians 5:1; Romans 8:38–39; 2 Corinthians 5:14

THE FRUIT EXPECTED FROM BELIEVERS

Grace produces visible change.

A. Fruit of the Spirit β€” Not works of flesh (Galatians 5:22–23)

B. Fruit Unto Holiness β€” End everlasting life (Romans 6:22)

C. Fruit Glorifies God β€” Walk worthy (Colossians 1:10)

Galatians 5:22; Romans 6:22; Colossians 1:10

THE FAILURE OF LICENSE-TO-SIN TEACHING

Grace abused is grace misunderstood.

A. Denies Christ’s Lordship β€” β€œWhy call me Lord?” (Luke 6:46)

B. Damages Testimony β€” Blasphemed among Gentiles (Romans 2:24)

C. Distorts Paul’s Gospel β€” Wrested to destruction (2 Peter 3:16)

Luke 6:46; Romans 2:24; 2 Peter 3:16

THE FOCUS OF GRACE LIVING

Grace points us upward, not inward.

A. Looking for Blessed Hope β€” Christ’s appearing (Titus 2:13)

B. Living in Thankfulness β€” Redeemed life response (Colossians 3:15)

C. Laboring with Expectation β€” Not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Titus 2:13; Colossians 3:15; 1 Corinthians 15:58

CONCLUSION

Grace does not excuse sinβ€”it exposes, empowers, and transforms.

The cross did not free us to sin, but freed us from sin.

Law restrains the flesh temporarily; grace changes the heart permanently.
