2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.”

INTRODUCTION: WHY TRUTH MUST BE DIVIDED

The Bible is ALL true, but not all truth is addressed to the same people at the same time.
Failure to rightly divide results in:
Confusion
Legalism
Fear
Contradictory doctrine

God never contradicts Himself—but misapplied Scripture does.

The sword of the Word does not destroy truth—it separates truth from truth.

9 BIBLICAL DISTINCTIONS: UNDER LAW vs. UNDER GRACE

①DIFFERENT DISPENSATIONS
Romans 15:4; Ephesians 3:2
God works through distinct administrations.

Law Dispensation – God dealing with Israel
Grace Dispensation – God dealing with the Body of Christ
Right Division – Recognizing God’s order

Mixing dispensations produces doctrinal error.

②DIFFERENT PEOPLE
Exodus 19:5–6; Ephesians 2:14–16
Law was given to Israel—not the Church.

Covenant Nation – Israel under Moses
Called-Out Body – Church under Christ
Clear Separation – Earthly vs. heavenly people

Israel = Kingdom promises
Church = Heavenly position

③DIFFERENT COVENANTS
Exodus 24:3; Hebrews 8:6
Law demands obedience—Grace supplies righteousness.

Conditional Covenant – “If you obey…”
Completed Covenant – “It is finished”
Christ-Centered Covenant – Blood, not behavior

Grace rests on Christ’s work, not man’s performance.

④DIFFERENT COMMANDMENTS
Matthew 5:48; Romans 6:14
Law commands perfection—Grace provides position.

Law Exposes Sin – Condemns the sinner
Grace Removes Condemnation – Declares righteousness
Law Pressures – Grace empowers

The Law tells you what you are.
Grace tells you who you are in Christ.

⑤DIFFERENT MINISTRIES
Matthew 15:24; Romans 15:8
Jesus’ earthly ministry ≠ today’s Church doctrine.

Minister of Circumcision – To Israel
Messianic Offer – Kingdom at hand
Post-Resurrection Revelation – Given to Paul

The Sermon on the Mount is not Church-Age doctrine.

⑥DIFFERENT GOSPEL EMPHASIS
Matthew 4:17; 1 Corinthians 15:1–4
Same Savior—different message content.

Kingdom Gospel – Repentance + kingdom expectation
Grace Gospel – Christ’s death, burial, resurrection
Clarity Through Paul – Salvation by faith alone
Salvation today rests on belief, not works.

⑦DIFFERENT MOTIVATIONS

Law motivates by fear—Grace motivates by love.

Blessings Earned – Under Law
Blessings Given – Under Grace
Security Assured – No condemnation

Grace produces obedience from gratitude, not terror.

⑧DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS
Psalm 37:23; Colossians 3:1–3
Law looks earthly—Grace looks heavenly.

Earthly Promises – Land, throne, kingdom
Heavenly Position – Seated with Christ
Upward Calling – Our citizenship is above

Grace changes where we live—from earth to heaven.

⑨DIFFERENT DESTINIES
Matthew 19:28; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17
Israel inherits the kingdom—Church meets the Lord.

Kingdom on Earth – Israel restored
Rapture of the Church – Before tribulation
Judgment Seat of Christ – Rewards, not condemnation
Law prepares a kingdom.
Grace prepares a heaven.

CONCLUSION: WHY RIGHT DIVISION MATTERS

When truth is not rightly divided:
Grace becomes law
Assurance becomes fear
Freedom becomes bondage

When truth is rightly divided:
Christ is exalted
Grace is clear
Scripture harmonizes

The Bible is a perfect sword—meant to divide correctly.
