RELIGION CAN’T SAVE YOU β€” ONLY CHRIST CAN

Key Text: 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

INTRODUCTION

Many sincere people believe religion savesβ€”church attendance, rituals, prayers, works, and effort. But Scripture, rightly divided (2 Timothy 2:15), reveals that salvation today is not religiousβ€”it is redemptive.
Religion builds ladders to heaven. Grace reveals a finished cross.

In this Dispensation of the Grace of God (Ephesians 3:1–2), salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone, apart from works.

Today we will examine 9 CLEAR, BIBLICAL DISTINCTIONS proving why RELIGION CAN’T SAVE YOUβ€”ONLY CHRIST CAN.

RELIGION RELIES ON WORKS
Ephesians 2:8–9

A. Human Effort – Religion emphasizes what you must do
Romans 10:3
B. Ritual Emphasis – Outward acts replace inward faith
Colossians 2:20–22
C. Rejected Merit – God refuses salvation by performance
Titus 3:5
Dispensational Insight: Works belonged to Israel’s programβ€”not the Body of Christ.

CROSS COMPLETED THE WORK
John 19:30

A. Finished Payment – Christ paid sin’s debt fully
Hebrews 10:12
B. Final Sacrifice – No more offerings required
Romans 6:10
C. Faith Response – Believe, don’t contribute
Romans 4:5
Dispensational Insight: The cross is sufficientβ€”religion adds insult to grace.

GRACE GIVEN FREELY
Romans 3:24

A. Undeserved Gift – Grace cannot be earned
Romans 11:6
B. Ungodly Justified – God saves sinners, not reformers
Romans 5:8
C. Unearned Standing – Salvation precedes service
Ephesians 2:10
Dispensational Insight: Grace saves first, then produces worksβ€”not vice versa.

FAITH FOCUSED ON THE GOSPEL
1 Corinthians 15:1–4

A. Death of Christ – Sin penalty paid
Romans 4:25
B. Burial of Christ – Sin put away
Colossians 2:12
C. Resurrection of Christ – Victory secured
Romans 6:9
Dispensational Insight: This gospel was revealed to Paul, not preached before the cross.

LAW LEFT BEHIND
Romans 6:14

A. End of Condemnation – Law no longer rules the believer
Romans 8:1
B. Exit from Bondage – Freedom replaces fear
Galatians 5:1
C. Establishment of Grace – New standing in Christ
Galatians 2:16
Dispensational Insight: Law governs Israel; Grace governs the Church.

RELIGION RESULTS IN PRIDE
Luke 18:11–12

A. Self-Righteous Comparison – Measuring against others
Romans 10:2
B. Spiritual Boasting – Glorying in flesh
Philippians 3:4–7
C. Shattered Confidence – All fall short
Romans 3:23
Dispensational Insight: Grace removes boastingβ€”religion feeds it.

CHRIST CREATES A NEW CREATURE
2 Corinthians 5:17

A. Spiritual Birth – New life begins at belief
Titus 3:5
B. Complete Position – Accepted in Christ
Ephesians 1:6
C. Changed Identity – In Christ, not in religion
Colossians 2:10
Dispensational Insight: The believer is placed into Christ, not into a system.

ASSURANCE ABSENT IN RELIGION

1 John 5:13

A. Fear-Based Faith – Religion doubts salvation
Hebrews 2:15
B. Finished Foundation – Assurance rests in Christ
Romans 8:38–39
C. Sealed Security – Spirit guarantees redemption
Ephesians 1:13
Dispensational Insight: Eternal security is a grace truth revealed through Paul.

GLORY GIVEN TO GOD ALONE
Ephesians 2:7

A. Christ Exalted – Not man celebrated
Galatians 6:14
B. Grace Displayed – Salvation magnifies God
Romans 9:16
C. Gospel Proclaimed – Christ alone saves
2 Corinthians 4:5
Dispensational Insight: Grace glorifies Godβ€”religion glorifies man.

CONCLUSION

Religion builds ladders.
Grace points to a cross.
Religion says: Do more.
Grace says: It is finished.
Salvation is not prayer, baptism, confession, or worksβ€”
It is faith alone in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

CALL TO ACTION

Stop trusting religion.
Stop climbing dead ladders.
Believe the gospel today.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4
Romans 4:5
β€œBelieve on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” (Acts 16:31)

FINAL THOUGHTS

Religion improves behavior.
Grace transforms destiny.
Religion produces uncertainty.
Grace provides assurance.
