PUT OFF — PUT ON: LIVING OUT THE NEW MAN

Ephesians 4:22–24 (KJV)
Theme: Practical Christian living after salvation, not for salvation

INTRODUCTION

In the Dispensation of Grace, believers are not trying to become saved, but learning how to walk worthy of the calling we already have in Christ (Eph. 4:1).

Paul teaches that the Christian life is not behavior modification, but identity application.
We are told to PUT OFF the old man and PUT ON the new man—not to get saved, but because we are saved.

Salvation changes our position instantly, but sanctification involves our practice daily.

① THE CORRUPTION OF THE OLD MAN
Verse: Ephesians 4:22

A. Depraved Nature — The old man is Adamic, fallen, and fleshly (Rom. 7:18)
B. Deceitful Lusts — Sin promises pleasure but delivers bondage (Heb. 3:13)
C. Daily Pull — The flesh remains present until glorification (Gal. 5:17)
The old man is not reformed, he is rejected.

② THE COMMAND TO PUT OFF
Verse: Ephesians 4:22

A. A Deliberate Choice — “Put off” is a conscious act (Rom. 6:11)
B. A Continual Action — This is daily Christian living (Luke 9:23)
C. A Clear Break — We don’t manage sin, we mortify it (Col. 3:5)
Grace teaches us to say NO (Titus 2:12).

③ THE CONVERSION OF THE MIND

A. Renewed Thinking — Christianity begins in the mind (Rom. 12:2)

④ THE CREATION OF THE NEW MAN

B. A Divine Work — God created the new man, not you (Eph. 2:10)
C. A Distinct Nature — Born of God, not flesh (John 1:12–13)
The new man is already perfect in Christ.

⑤ THE CHARACTER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Verse: Ephesians 4:24

A. Imputed Righteousness — We are righteous in Christ (Rom. 5:1)
B. Practical Righteousness — We live out what we already possess (Rom. 6:13)
C. Proper Motive — Not law, but love (Gal. 5:6)
We don’t live right to be accepted—we live right because we are accepted.

⑥ THE CONDUCT OF TRUTH

A. Truth in Doctrine — Right belief produces right behavior (1 Tim. 4:16)
B. Truth in Speech — Lying belongs to the old man (Eph. 4:25)

Truth transforms, error enslaves.

⑦ THE CONFLICT WITH THE FLESH

Good works are the fruit, not the root.

CONCLUSION

The Christian life is not about fixing the old man, but functioning in the new man.
You are not trying to become something—you already are something in Christ.

CALL TO ACTION

Believers:
Stop living like who you used to be
Start living like who God says you are
Renew your mind through rightly divided Pauline truth

Unsaved:
You cannot put on the new man until you are in Christ.
Believe the Gospel:
Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose again
