PUT OFF β€” PUT ON: LIVING OUT THE NEW MAN

Ephesians 4:22–24 (KJV)
Theme: Practical Christian living after salvation, not for salvation

INTRODUCTION

In the Dispensation of Grace, believers are not trying to become saved, but learning how to walk worthy of the calling we already have in Christ (Eph. 4:1).

Paul teaches that the Christian life is not behavior modification, but identity application.
We are told to PUT OFF the old man and PUT ON the new manβ€”not to get saved, but because we are saved.

Salvation changes our position instantly, but sanctification involves our practice daily.

β‘  THE CORRUPTION OF THE OLD MAN
Verse: Ephesians 4:22

A. Depraved Nature β€” The old man is Adamic, fallen, and fleshly (Rom. 7:18)
B. Deceitful Lusts β€” Sin promises pleasure but delivers bondage (Heb. 3:13)
C. Daily Pull β€” The flesh remains present until glorification (Gal. 5:17)
The old man is not reformed, he is rejected.

β‘‘ THE COMMAND TO PUT OFF
Verse: Ephesians 4:22

A. A Deliberate Choice β€” β€œPut off” is a conscious act (Rom. 6:11)
B. A Continual Action β€” This is daily Christian living (Luke 9:23)
C. A Clear Break β€” We don’t manage sin, we mortify it (Col. 3:5)
Grace teaches us to say NO (Titus 2:12).

β‘’ THE CONVERSION OF THE MIND
Verse: Ephesians 4:23

A. Renewed Thinking β€” Christianity begins in the mind (Rom. 12:2)
B. Right Division β€” Understanding truth properly prevents confusion (2 Tim. 2:15)
C. Reprogrammed Values β€” We think heavenly, not earthly (Col. 3:2)
You live what you believe.

β‘£ THE CREATION OF THE NEW MAN

Verse: Ephesians 4:24

A. A New Identity β€” Created, not improved (2 Cor. 5:17)
B. A Divine Work β€” God created the new man, not you (Eph. 2:10)
C. A Distinct Nature β€” Born of God, not flesh (John 1:12–13)
The new man is already perfect in Christ.

β‘€ THE CHARACTER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Verse: Ephesians 4:24

A. Imputed Righteousness β€” We are righteous in Christ (Rom. 5:1)
B. Practical Righteousness β€” We live out what we already possess (Rom. 6:13)
C. Proper Motive β€” Not law, but love (Gal. 5:6)
We don’t live right to be acceptedβ€”we live right because we are accepted.

β‘₯ THE CONDUCT OF TRUTH
Verse: Ephesians 4:24

A. Truth in Doctrine β€” Right belief produces right behavior (1 Tim. 4:16)
B. Truth in Speech β€” Lying belongs to the old man (Eph. 4:25)
C. Truth in Walk β€” Our life must match our light (Eph. 5:8)
Truth transforms, error enslaves.

⑦ THE CONFLICT WITH THE FLESH
Verse: Galatians 5:16–17

A. An Ongoing Battle β€” Flesh vs. Spirit (Rom. 7:22–23)
B. A Necessary Discipline β€” Walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16)
C. A Certain Victory β€” Through Christ, not self (Rom. 8:2)
Victory is yielding, not striving.

⑧ THE CONSTRUCTION OF DAILY WALK
Verse: Ephesians 4:1

A. Worthy Walk β€” Matching behavior with calling
B. Witness Walk β€” Our life preaches before our lips (Phil. 2:15)
C. Workmanship Walk β€” Created unto good works (Eph. 2:10)
Good works are the fruit, not the root.

⑨ THE CONSECRATION TO CHRIST
Verse: Romans 12:1

A. Living Sacrifice β€” Daily surrender
B. Loyal Service β€” We belong to Christ (1 Cor. 6:20)
C. Looking Ahead β€” Living for eternity (Col. 3:4)
The new man lives for Christ’s glory, not self.

CONCLUSION

The Christian life is not about fixing the old man, but functioning in the new man.
You are not trying to become somethingβ€”you already are something in Christ.
PUT OFF what you were
PUT ON who you are
