ONE MOUTH… MANY TONGUES

(The Power, Peril, and Purpose of the Tongue in the Dispensation of Grace)
Key Pauline Text: Ephesians 4:29
β€œLet no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying…”

INTRODUCTION

In this present Dispensation of the Grace of God (Ephesians 3:1–2), believers are not under the Law but under Graceβ€”yet grace never excuses careless speech.

The tongue reveals the heart, spreads doctrine, wounds saints, or builds the Body of Christ.
One mouth can speak many tonguesβ€”some holy, some harmful.

Today we will examine 9 DISPENSATIONAL TRUTHS about the tongueβ€”rightly divided and rightly directed.

PROCLAIMING TONGUE (Truth that Glorifies God)
Colossians 1:25; Romans 10:17
Explanation:
In this age, God is magnified when believers proclaim the Pauline gospel of grace.

A. Preaches Christ Alone – Not religion, but the finished cross
B. Publishes Pure Grace – Salvation by grace through faith
C. Proclaims Right Doctrine – According to Romans–Philemon
Dispensational Insight: The primary tongue of the believer today is a gospel-proclaiming tongue, not a sign-seeking one.

PRAYING TONGUE (Dependence on God)
Ephesians 6:18; Philippians 4:6
Explanation:
Prayer in this dispensation is not ritualβ€”it is relationship.

A. Access Without Mediators – Direct access in Christ
B. Asking According to Grace – Not kingdom demands
C. Aligning with God’s Will – Thankful, not fearful
Dispensational Insight: We pray in Christ, not toward a temple.

PRAISING TONGUE (Gratitude Under Grace)
Ephesians 5:19–20; Colossians 3:16
Explanation:
Grace produces gratitude, not murmuring.

A. Thankful Speech – Even in trials
B. Truth-Centered Songs – Teaching and admonishing
C. Testifying of Grace – Not self-promotion
Dispensational Insight: Praise flows from position, not performance.

POISONOUS TONGUE (Corrupt Communication)
Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 3:8
Explanation:
Grace does not excuse filthy or destructive speech.

A. Filthy Talk – Dishonors Christ
B. Fierce Words – Produce strife
C. Fleshly Speech – Reveals carnality
Dispensational Insight: Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness, not speak it freely.

PROUD TONGUE (Self-Exalting Speech)
1 Corinthians 1:29–31; Romans 12:3
Explanation:
Pride corrupts both doctrine and fellowship.

A. Boasting in Flesh – Not in Christ
B. Belittling Others – Damages unity
C. Bragging Spiritually – Denies grace
Dispensational Insight: Grace humbles; pride imitates religion.

PERVERSE TONGUE (Lying & Deception)
Colossians 3:9; Ephesians 4:25
Explanation:
Falsehood fractures the Body of Christ.

A. Doctrinal Lies – Mix law and grace
B. Dishonest Speech – Breaks trust
C. Double Talk – Confuses believers
Dispensational Insight: Right doctrine requires truthful speech.

PROVOKING TONGUE (Anger & Bitterness)
Ephesians 4:31; Romans 12:19
Explanation:
Uncontrolled speech ignites spiritual fires.

A. Angry Outbursts – Quench edification
B. Accusing Words – Reflect the flesh
C. Avenging Speech – Usurps God’s role
Dispensational Insight: The believer rests in grace, not retaliation.

POLLUTING TONGUE (Gossip & Murmuring)
Philippians 2:14; 2 Corinthians 12:20
Explanation:
Gossip masquerades as concern but destroys unity.

A. Murmuring Spirit – Complains against grace
B. Meddling Speech – Invades others’ matters
C. Misleading Talk – Damages testimony
Dispensational Insight: The Body of Christ grows by edification, not rumor.

PURIFYING TONGUE (Edifying Speech)
Ephesians 4:29; Romans 14:19
Explanation:
Grace trains the tongue to heal, not harm.

A. Building Words – Strengthen believers
B. Blessing Speech – Minister grace
C. Balanced Doctrine – Rightly divided truth
Dispensational Insight: The goal of speech is edification of the Body.

CONCLUSION

One mouth can speak many tonguesβ€”
but only one kind pleases God in this age:
A tongue submitted to grace, guided by truth, and governed by love.

CALL TO ACTION

Examine your tongue
Submit your speech to Scripture
Speak grace to the hearers
β€œLet your speech be always with grace…” (Colossians 4:6)

FINAL THOUGHTS

In the Dispensation of Grace,
the tongue is not for signs, anger, or selfβ€”
but for Christ, truth, and edification.
One mouth… choose one message.
