OLD TESTAMENT: Is It for Our OBEDIENCE or Our LEARNING?

Key Texts: 1 Corinthians 10:11; Romans 15:4; 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

Many believers are confused because they read the Old Testament without Right Division. Some try to obey Israel’s law, others ignore the Old Testament altogether.
Paulβ€”our apostle for todayβ€”gives clarity:

β€œNow all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition…” (1 Corinthians 10:11)

The Old Testament is not our covenant, but it is our classroom.

COVENANTAL CONTEXT
Exodus 19:5–6; Romans 9:4

A. Given to Israel, not the Church
B. Governed by a national covenant
C. Conditional blessings and curses
Dispensational Insight:
The Church is not Israel; covenants belong to Israel.

MEDIATORIAL MINISTRY
Exodus 20:19; Galatians 3:19

A. Moses stood between God and Israel
B. Law required a human mediator
C. Access to God was restricted
Today, Christ alone is our Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5).

LEGAL LIVING
Deuteronomy 27:26; Galatians 3:10

A. 600+ commandments to keep
B. Perfect obedience demanded
C. Failure brought condemnation
The Law exposes sin but cannot save.

CURSING CONSEQUENCES
Deuteronomy 28:15; Hebrews 10:28

A. Disobedience brought death
B. Judgment was immediate and physical
C. Fear governed obedience
This shows God’s holinessβ€”but not our rule of life.

BURDENSOME BONDAGE
Acts 15:10; Romans 7:10

A. Heavy yoke upon Israel
B. No power to obey perfectly
C. Led to despair, not peace
Grace delivers what Law demands.

RIGHTLY DIVIDED REASON
2 Timothy 2:15; Romans 6:14

A. Law for Israel
B. Grace for the Body of Christ
C. Confusion comes from mixing the two
We are not under the Law, but under Grace.

EDUCATIONAL EXAMPLES
1 Corinthians 10:6; Romans 15:4

A. Israel’s failures warn us
B. God’s faithfulness encourages us
C. Judgment teaches reverence
The Old Testament instructs, not instructs us to imitate.

PROFITABLE PURPOSE

2 Timothy 3:16; Romans 15:4

A. Doctrineβ€”reveals God’s character
B. Reproofβ€”shows consequences of sin
C. Correctionβ€”points to Christ
Scripture is profitable when rightly divided.

CHRISTOCENTRIC CONCLUSION
Luke 24:27; Colossians 2:16–17

A. Law points to Christ
B. Shadows fulfilled in Christ
C. Grace completes what Law began
The Old Testament magnifies Christβ€”but Pauline doctrine explains our standing in Him.

CONCLUSION

The Old Testament is:
Not our command
Not our covenant
Not our rule of life
But it IS:
Our learning
Our warning
Our witness to God’s holiness and grace
β€œFor whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning…” (Romans 15:4)
