HOW TO SPOT A FAKE PASTOR

Open Your Eyes, Guard Your Faith
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

Not everyone who stands behind a pulpit stands for the truth.

The Bible warns that false ministers do not always deny Christ openlyβ€”they disguise error with religious language. In the Dispensation of Grace, believers are commanded to discern doctrine, not blindly follow titles (2 Timothy 2:15).

Today, we will rightly divide the Word to identify 9 biblical marks of a FAKE pastor, so the Body of Christ may be protected, grounded, and established in grace.

DECEPTIVE APPEARANCE
2 Corinthians 11:14–15
Explanation:
Fake pastors often look godly but teach subtly corrupted doctrine.

A. Angelic Mask – Satan appears as an angel of light
B. Ministerial Masquerade – False apostles look like servants of righteousness
C. Outward Orthodoxy – Right words, wrong message
Dispensational Insight:
Truth is not determined by charisma, miracles, or crowdsβ€”but by rightly divided doctrine.

DISTORTED DOCTRINE
Galatians 1:6–9
Explanation:
Any message that alters grace is accursed.

A. Mixed Message – Grace + law
B. Modified Gospel – Faith plus works
C. Misplaced Application – Israel’s program forced onto the Church
Dispensational Insight:
The Gospel for today is 1 Corinthians 15:1–4, revealed to Paul.

DENIAL OF RIGHT DIVISION
2 Timothy 2:15
Explanation:
Fake pastors reject dispensational distinctions.

A. Confused Commissions – Mixing Great Commission with Grace Commission
B. Covenant Confusion – Blending Israel and the Body of Christ
C. Context Corruption – Ignoring audience, time, and purpose
Dispensational Insight:
Right division is not optionalβ€”it is commanded.

DEVOTION TO MONEY
1 Timothy 6:5–10
Explanation:
False pastors exploit faith for financial gain.

A. Prosperity Perversion – God reduced to a financial system
B. Pressure to Pay – Guilt-driven giving
C. Profit over People – Ministry becomes merchandise
Dispensational Insight:
Grace gives freely; false religion demands payment.

DISREGARD FOR SCRIPTURE

Colossians 2:8
Explanation:
Feelings replace facts; experiences replace exposition.

A. Philosophy over Paul – Psychology replaces doctrine
B. Tradition over Truth – Church customs over Scripture
C. Emotion over Exegesis – Feel-good sermons without truth
Dispensational Insight:
The Church is built on revelation, not repetition.

DILUTION OF SIN
Romans 6:1–2
Explanation:
Fake pastors soften sin to keep crowds.

A. Redefining Righteousness – Sin renamed as β€œstruggle”
B. Avoiding Accountability – No rebuke, no correction
C. Appeasing Culture – Fear of offense overrides truth
Dispensational Insight:
Grace teaches holinessβ€”not license.

DISMISSAL OF PAUL
Romans 16:25–26
Explanation:
False teachers marginalize Paul’s apostleship.

A. Pauline Silence – Preaching from everywhere except Romans–Philemon
B. Mystery Rejection – Denial of the Body of Christ revelation
C. Apostolic Undermining – Treating Paul as optional
Dispensational Insight:
Paul is our apostle for this dispensation.

DOMINATING CONTROL
3 John 9–10
Explanation:
Fake pastors rule by fear, not truth.

A. Spiritual Intimidation – β€œTouch not the anointed” abuse
B. Suppressing Questions – Discernment labeled rebellion
C. Centralized Power – Pastor replaces Christ as authority
Dispensational Insight:
Christ is the Headβ€”not the pastor.

DESTINATION OF DESTRUCTION
Philippians 3:18–19
Explanation:
False pastors may sound spiritual but lead to ruin.

A. Earthly Focus – Success over salvation
B. Fleshly Ends – Serving appetite, not truth
C. Final Judgment – God will judge false shepherds
Dispensational Insight:
Eternal truth matters more than temporal success.

CONCLUSION

Fake pastors are not revealed by hornsβ€”but by heresy.
They are not exposed by toneβ€”but by teaching.
The cure is not suspicionβ€”it is sound doctrine rightly divided.

β€œMark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” β€” Romans 16:17 (KJV)
