HOW TO RUN THE RACE OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
INTRODUCTION
The Christian life is not a playgroundβit is a race.
The Apostle Paul, writing to the Body of Christ, repeatedly uses athletic language to describe our walk in this Dispensation of Grace. We are not running to be savedβwe are running because we are saved. The goal is not salvation, but faithfulness, reward, and approval at the Judgment Seat of Christ (1 Cor. 9:24; 2 Cor. 5:10).Β
RENOUNCE THE WEIGHTS
Hebrews 12:1; 1 Corinthians 6:12
Remove hindrances β Not all weights are sins, but they slow spiritual progress.
Refuse enslavements β Lawful things must not dominate the believer.
Release distractions β Earthly entanglements steal eternal focus.
Dispensational Insight: Grace frees us from the Law, but grace also demands discipline.
REPENT OF THE SINS
Romans 6:12β13; 1 Corinthians 9:27
Reject fleshly control β Sin reigns only when yielded to.
Restrain bodily appetites β Paul disciplined his body for usefulness.
Restore fellowship β Sin breaks fellowship, not sonship.
Pauline Truth: Victory over sin flows from identity in Christ, not Law-keeping.
REFIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS
Hebrews 12:2; Colossians 3:1β2
Regard Christβs example β He endured for future glory.
Remember Christβs position β Seated, victorious, reigning.
Refocus from self to Savior β The race is run by faith, not feelings.
Dispensation of Grace: Our pattern is the risen, glorified Christβnot Israelβs earthly Messiah.
RUN WITH REGULARITY
1 Corinthians 9:24; Philippians 3:14
Pursue consistency β Sporadic runners never finish well.
Practice perseverance β Daily obedience produces endurance.
Press purposefully β No aimless Christianity.
Pauline emphasis: Grace motivates effort; it never excuses laziness.
RELY ON THE SPIRIT
Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:4
Depend on divine power β The flesh cannot finish the race.
Deny self-effort religion β Legalism weakens spiritual stamina.
Demonstrate fruit β The Spirit produces lasting results.
Right Division: The Spirit permanently indwells Church Age believers (Eph. 1:13).
RESIST DISCOURAGEMENT
2 Corinthians 4:16β18; Galatians 6:9
Recognize suffering is normal β Opposition proves youβre running.
Reject quitting thoughts β Weariness is temporary; reward is eternal.
Rejoice in hope β Glory outweighs pain.
Paul suffered more than allβyet pressed on by grace.
RUN IN SEPARATION
Romans 12:2; 2 Timothy 2:4
Separate from worldliness β The world crowds the racecourse.
Shun entanglements β Soldiers donβt run with baggage.
Stand distinctively β Grace produces holy living.
Dispensational clarity: Separation is not isolation, but devotion.
REMEMBER THE JUDGMENT SEAT
2 Corinthians 5:10; Romans 14:10
Review coming accountability β Every believer will be evaluated.
Reward faithful labor β Not all runners receive crowns.
Regret wasted opportunities β Salvation is free; rewards are earned.
Paulβs motivation: Approval from Christ, not men.
RUN FOR THE REWARD
1 Corinthians 9:25; 2 Timothy 4:7β8
Reach for the incorruptible crown β Eternal, not earthly.
Remain faithful to the finish β Finishing well matters.
Receive Christβs commendation β βWell doneβ outweighs all applause.
Grace goal: Reigning with Christ in glory.
CONCLUSION
The Christian race is not about speed, popularity, or comfortβitβs about faithfulness. Many start, few finish strong. In this Dispensation of Grace, God calls us to run by grace, through faith, empowered by the Spirit, with our eyes fixed on Christ.Β
