β€œBELIEVING THE BIBLE β€” NOT YOURSELF”

(Rightly Dividing Truth vs. Selective Belief)
2 Timothy 2:15
β€œStudy to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.”

INTRODUCTION

We live in a generation that customizes truth. Many say, β€œI believe the Bible,” yet reject the parts they don’t like. But partial belief is personal belief, not biblical faith.

Dispensational truth teaches us that God’s Word must be received as God gave it β€” not edited by human preference.

Today we will expose the danger of selective belief and call believers back to SUBMISSION to Scripture, rightly divided.

PICKED-AND-CHOSEN SCRIPTURE
2 Timothy 4:3–4
Explanation:
Selective belief creates a Bible that pleases the flesh but rejects correction.

A. Preference Over Precept – People choose what feels good
Proverbs 14:12
B. Comfort Over Correction – Truth is rejected when it convicts
Galatians 4:16
C. Taste Over Truth – Teachers cater to itching ears
2 Timothy 4:3

PATCHED-UP PASSAGES
Jeremiah 6:14
Explanation:
Like the image, people climb Scripture and paste over verses they dislike.

A. Editing God’s Word – Adding human opinions
Proverbs 30:6
B. Covering Conviction – Hiding uncomfortable doctrine
John 3:20
C. Creating Confusion – Scripture loses authority
1 Corinthians 14:33

PERSONALIZED PHILOSOPHY
Colossians 2:8
Explanation:
When belief is filtered through self, truth becomes subjective.

A. Self as Final Authority – β€œI feel” replaces β€œGod said”
Judges 21:25
B. Culture Over Christ – Worldly thinking shapes doctrine
Romans 12:2
C. Reason Over Revelation – Human wisdom exalts itself
1 Corinthians 1:21

PROGRAM-MIXING PROBLEM
2 Timothy 2:15
Explanation (Dispensational):
Mixing Israel’s program with the Church creates contradictions.

A. Law Mixed with Grace – Produces bondage
Galatians 5:1
B. Kingdom Mixed with Body – Confuses hope
Ephesians 1:22–23
C. Works Mixed with Faith – Destroys assurance
Romans 11:6

PAULINE TRUTH REJECTED
Romans 11:13
Explanation:
Many accept Jesus’ name but reject Jesus’ message for today.

A. Paul’s Gospel Ignored – Yet revealed for this age
Ephesians 3:1–2
B. Grace Minimized – Replaced with performance
Galatians 1:6–7
C. Mystery Denied – Church truth hidden before Paul
Colossians 1:25–26

PARTIAL OBEDIENCE PRACTICED
James 1:22
Explanation:
Believing selectively leads to living selectively.

A. Hearing Without Heeding – Knowledge without submission
Ezekiel 33:31
B. Obedience on Our Terms – Conditional surrender
Luke 6:46
C. Religion Without Relationship – Form without power
2 Timothy 3:5

PRODUCED FALSE PEACE
Jeremiah 8:11
Explanation:
False belief produces a false assurance.

A. Peace Without Truth – Comfort built on error
Isaiah 48:22
B. Assurance Without Christ’s Work – Trusting self
Hebrews 10:10
C. Confidence Without Cross – Denying sufficiency
1 Corinthians 1:18

POWER OF SCRIPTURE REJECTED
Hebrews 4:12
Explanation:
God’s Word must cut β€” not be covered.

A. Conviction Avoided – Word is silenced
John 16:8
B. Correction Resisted – Pride refuses rebuke
Proverbs 12:1
C. Change Prevented – Growth stops
Romans 15:4

PROPER SUBMISSION REQUIRED
Romans 6:17
Explanation:
True belief submits to ALL Scripture β€” rightly divided.

A. Trust the Text – Not tradition
Mark 7:13
B. Receive the Revelation – Given to Paul
Ephesians 3:9
C. Rest in the Finished Work – Christ alone
1 Corinthians 15:1–4

CONCLUSION

You cannot believe the Bible while rejecting parts of it.
If you accept only what you like, you are believing yourself.
Rightly divided truth produces clarity, peace, assurance, and growth.
