ADDICTION TO SIN vs. ADDICTION TO THE SCRIPTURES

(A Pauline Call to Holy Devotion in the Dispensation of Grace)

INTRODUCTION

In this present Dispensation of the Grace of God (Ephesians 3:1–2), believers are no longer under the law but under grace (Romans 6:14).

Yet grace is often misunderstood as permission to sin instead of power to overcome sin.

Paul does not call the Body of Christ to sinless perfectionβ€”but to Scripture-saturated living.
What you feed grows.
What you follow forms you.
What you love masters you.

Today, we will rightly divide two addictions:
Addiction to Sin
Addiction to the Scriptures

DOMINION – Who Rules the Life
Romans 6:16

A. Sin Enslaves – Sin promises freedom but produces bondage
Romans 6:12
B. Scripture Governs – God’s Word reigns in the renewed mind
Colossians 3:16
C. Service Reveals – What you obey shows who rules you
Romans 6:22
Dispensational Truth:
Grace does not remove lordshipβ€”it changes masters.

DESIRES – What the Heart Craves
Romans 7:22–23

A. Flesh Pulls Downward – Lust wars against the inner man
Galatians 5:17
B. Word Pulls Upward – Scripture reforms desires
Psalm 119:11
C. Mind Determines Direction – What you set your mind on controls appetite
Romans 8:5–6

DISCIPLINE – What Is Practiced Daily
1 Timothy 4:7

A. Sin Requires Feeding – Habits strengthen bondage
Romans 6:19
B. Scripture Requires Training – Study builds maturity
2 Timothy 2:15
C. Practice Produces Power – Consistency shapes character
Hebrews 5:14

DECEPTION – What Blinds the Mind
Ephesians 4:18

A. Sin Darkens Understanding – Pleasure numbs truth
Romans 1:21
B. Scripture Illuminates Truth – God’s Word gives light
Ephesians 1:18
C. Truth Frees the Captive – Knowledge breaks chains
John 8:32 (applied spiritually)

DESTINATION – Where the Path Leads
Romans 6:21–23

A. Sin Ends in Death – Loss, shame, and destruction
James 1:15
B. Scripture Leads to Life – Growth, stability, and hope
2 Timothy 3:15
C. Grace Secures Eternity – Salvation rests in Christ alone
Ephesians 2:8–9

DEVOTION – What Is Loved Most
Colossians 3:2

A. Sin Demands Attention – Constant craving and control
Romans 13:14
B. Scripture Deserves Affection – God’s Word becomes delight
Psalm 119:97
C. Love Directs Loyalty – You follow what you treasure
Matthew 6:21

DELIVERANCE – How Freedom Is Experienced
Romans 8:2

A. Sin Ensnarers the Soul – Chains the conscience
Titus 3:3
B. Scripture Renews the Mind – Freedom through truth
Romans 12:2
C. Spirit Empowers Victory – Not self-effort, but divine power
Galatians 5:16

DISPLAY – What the Life Shows
Titus 2:11–12

A. Sin Displays the Flesh – Shameful fruit
Galatians 5:19–21
B. Scripture Displays Christ – Transformed conduct
Galatians 5:22–23
C. Walk Proves Doctrine – Belief shows in behavior
Ephesians 4:1

DEPENDENCE – Who Supplies Strength
Philippians 4:13

A. Sin Weakens Resolve – Leaves emptiness
Proverbs 13:15
B. Scripture Strengthens Faith – Builds endurance
Romans 10:17
C. Grace Sustains Growth – God works within
2 Corinthians 12:9

CONCLUSION

Sin addicts enslave.
Scripture addicts grow.
The problem today is not lack of church attendanceβ€”but lack of Bible dependence.
Paul never called the Body of Christ to emotional experiencesβ€”but to renewed minds.
