THE FOUR TYPES OF FAITH

(Rightly Divided: Kingdom Parable, Grace Application)
Key Pauline Balance Texts:
2 Timothy 2:15 · Romans 15:4 · 1 Corinthians 10:11

INTRODUCTION

The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13; Mark 4; Luke is often misused doctrinally, causing believers to doubt their salvation.

Right Division Matters:
This parable is NOT the gospel of grace
It is Kingdom truth spoken to Israel
It describes responses to the word of the Kingdom, not justification by faith alone
However, Paul teaches that these things were written for our learning (Romans 15:4).

Today, we will examine 9 Pauline applications—not to test salvation—but to evaluate growth, walk, and fruitfulness.

PROCLAIMED WORD
Romans 10:17
Faith begins with hearing, not feeling.

A. Spoken Truth – Faith comes by the word
B. Scriptural Source – God’s word, not tradition
C. Saving Focus – The gospel of Christ (1 Cor. 15:1–4)
Dispensational Insight:
Paul’s gospel produces justification, not probation.

PATHWAY HEART (Way Side)
2 Corinthians 4:4
A hardened heart rejects truth immediately.

A. Closed Mind – Truth dismissed
B. Blinded Understanding – Satan hinders perception
C. Calloused Will – No interest in grace
Pauline Truth:
This describes unbelievers, not carnal saints.

PASSING RESPONSE (Rocky Ground)
Colossians 2:6–7
Initial excitement without grounding.

A. Emotional Faith – Joy without doctrine
B. Empty Roots – No establishment in grace
C. Eventual Withering – Faith not sustained
Right Division:
This is profession without possession, not loss of salvation.

PRESSURED WALK (Among Thorns)
1 Timothy 6:9–10
Worldly cares choke spiritual growth.

A. Divided Affections – Christ + world
B. Distracting Riches – Earthly priorities dominate
C. Declining Fruit – Spiritual stagnation
Grace Application:
Saved people can be unfruitful, but not unsaved again.

PLANTED BELIEF (Good Ground Begins)
Colossians 2:6
True faith rests in Christ’s finished work.

A. Rooted in Christ – Not self
B. Reliant on Grace – Not works
C. Resting in Assurance – Not fear
Pauline Doctrine:
We are complete in Him (Col. 2:10).

PROGRESSIVE GROWTH
Ephesians 4:15
Spiritual growth is gradual.

A. Learning Grace – Renewing the mind
B. Living Truth – Walking in Christ
C. Leaving Flesh – Maturing in doctrine
Dispensational Balance:
Growth affects service, not salvation.

PRODUCTIVE FRUIT
Galatians 5:22–23
Fruit is the result of spiritual life.

A. Inner Change – Character transformation
B. Outward Evidence – Godliness displayed
C. Ongoing Yield – Consistent walk
Grace Reality:
Fruit proves fellowship, not justification.

PATIENT ENDURANCE
2 Timothy 2:12
Fruit requires patience.

A. Trials Endured – Faith tested
B. Truth Maintained – Doctrine held
C. Testimony Preserved – Christ honored
Insight:
Endurance affects reward, not eternal destiny.

PRIZE-MINDED WALK
1 Corinthians 9:24–27
Paul lived for reward, not rescue.

A. Disciplined Life – Spiritual focus
B. Directed Purpose – Eternal priorities
C. Desired Approval – Christ’s judgment seat
Grace Truth:
Salvation is free—reward is earned.

CONCLUSION

The four soils do NOT teach:
Losing salvation
Works salvation
Conditional grace
They DO teach:
Responses to truth
Growth vs. barrenness
Fellowship vs. carnality

CALL TO ACTION

Believe the gospel (1 Cor. 15:1–4)
Be rooted in grace
Bear fruit with patience
Don’t ask, “Am I saved?”
Ask, “Am I growing?”

FINAL THOUGHTS

Faith saves instantly
Growth takes time
Fruit brings reward
Not all believers bear fruit—
but all believers are secure in Christ.
