THE PASTOR WHO CARESΒ -vs- THE PASTOR WHO CONTROLS

Key Text: Acts 20:28–30; 2 Corinthians 1:24
Dispensational Truth: The Church, the Body of Christ, under graceβ€”NOT Israel under law (Ephesians 3:1–9)

INTRODUCTION

Not every man behind a pulpit is a shepherd. Some feed, others fleece. Some edify, others enslave.
Paul warned the Body of Christ that after his departure, grievous wolves would ariseβ€”even from among leaders (Acts 20:29–30).

Today we will clearly contrast THE PASTOR WHO CARES with THE PASTOR WHO CONTROLS, so believers can discern truth from tyranny and shepherding from spiritual abuse.

POSTURE β€” SERVANT vs. SOVEREIGN
2 Corinthians 1:24

Caring Pastor
Serves, not dominates (Matthew 20:26)
Stands beside believers, not above them
Helps joy, not controls faith

Controlling Pastor
Acts as spiritual ruler
Claims authority over conscience
Replaces Christ with self
Dispensational Insight: Paul rejected lordship over the Body of Christ.

PURPOSE β€” EDIFICATION vs. EXPLOITATION
Ephesians 4:11–12

Caring Pastor
Builds saints for ministry
Encourages spiritual growth
Equips believers to stand

Controlling Pastor
Uses people to build a platform
Keeps saints dependent
Centralizes power
The ministry is for the saints, not for the ego.

PREACHING β€” TRUTH vs. THREATS
2 Timothy 2:15

Caring Pastor
Rightly divides the Word
Teaches grace clearly
Invites Berean study

Controlling Pastor
Twists Scripture
Uses fear and guilt
Discourages questions
Grace teaching liberates; fear preaching enslaves.

PEOPLE β€” SHEEP vs. SUBJECTS
1 Peter 5:2–3

Caring Pastor
Feeds willingly
Leads by example
Respects liberty in Christ

Controlling Pastor
Rules by intimidation
Demands loyalty
Punishes disagreement
Pastors are shepherds, not slave-masters.

POWER β€” SPIRIT vs. SYSTEM

2 Corinthians 3:17

Caring Pastor
Trusts the Holy Spirit to work
Encourages personal conviction
Promotes liberty

Controlling Pastor
Relies on man-made rules
Enforces compliance
Fears loss of control
Where the Spirit leads, freedom follows.

PROTECTION β€” GUARDING vs. GROOMING
Acts 20:28–29

Caring Pastor
Warns against false doctrine
Protects from wolves
Points to Christ alone

Controlling Pastor
Is the wolf in disguise
Silences discernment
Attacks outside truth
Wolves hate the light of rightly divided truth.

PERSUASION β€” SCRIPTURE vs. SHAME

Galatians 5:1

Caring Pastor
Appeals through Scripture
Encourages growth in grace
Honors conscience

Controlling Pastor
Uses shame tactics
Threatens loss of β€œblessing”
Binds with tradition
Grace persuades; law pressures.

PROVISION β€” GENEROSITY vs. GREED
2 Corinthians 12:14

Caring Pastor
Seeks souls, not silver
Gives more than he takes
Models contentment

Controlling Pastor
Constantly demands money
Links giving to favor
Exploits fear
Paul worked to avoid burdening the flock.

PRODUCE β€” MATURITY vs. MANIPULATION
Colossians 1:28

Caring Pastor
Produces mature believers
Encourages direct walk with Christ
Rejoices when saints grow

Controlling Pastor
Produces dependence
Discourages independence in Christ
Fears believers outgrowing him
True shepherds want sheep to thriveβ€”even without them.

CONCLUSION

The Pastor Who Cares reflects Christ’s heart for the Body of Christ.
The Pastor Who Controls replaces Christ with control.
β€œStand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” (Galatians 5:1)

CALL TO ACTION

Test every pastor by Scripture
Reject fear-based religion
Embrace grace-based shepherding
Follow Christβ€”not personalities

FINAL THOUGHTS

Control thrives where grace is hidden
Care flourishes where truth is taught
The Body of Christ grows best under liberty
Rightly divided truth exposes false shepherds

Choose CARE over CONTROL.
Grace over guilt.
Christ over clergy.
