WHAT YOU FEED IS WHAT YOU BECOME

(Flesh vs. Spirit in the Life of the Believer)
Galatians 5:19–23 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

The Christian life is not neutral ground. Every believer feeds something dailyβ€”either the flesh or the Spirit. Though salvation is settled by grace alone (1 Corinthians 15:1–4), daily fruit reveals what we are yielding to.

Paul teaches that the flesh and the Spirit are in constant conflict (Galatians 5:17). The outcome of that conflict is visible in what our lives produce.

SOURCE – Where Life Draws Its Strength
Galatians 5:16; Romans 8:5

Self-Source – The flesh feeds on self-rule
Spirit-Source – The Spirit feeds on submission
Seen Source – Fruit reveals the source of control
Dispensational Insight:
The believer already possesses the Spirit, but must walk in Him daily.

SEED – What You Consistently Sow
Galatians 6:7–8

Carnal Seed – Feeds jealousy, fear, stress
Christly Seed – Feeds love, joy, peace
Certain Seedtime – What is sown always grows
Grace saves instantly, but growth is progressive.

STRUGGLE – The Ongoing Inner Conflict
Galatians 5:17; Romans 7:18–23

Flesh Fights – Against spiritual desires
Spirit Strives – Against sinful impulses
Submission Settles – Victory comes by yielding
This struggle is normal for saved peopleβ€”not lost ones.

SYMPTOMS – Visible Evidence of the Flesh
Galatians 5:19–21

Emotional Symptoms – Jealousy, fear, hopelessness
Mental Symptoms – Stress, impatience, restlessness
Moral Symptoms – Loss of restraint and peace
These are not causesβ€”they are results.

SUPPLY – The Spirit’s Nourishment
Galatians 5:22–23; Colossians 3:16

Word Supply – Scripture renews the mind
Walk Supply – Daily dependence fuels growth
Worship Supply – Gratitude strengthens faith
The Spirit feeds on truth rightly divided.

SUBMISSION – The Key to Spirit Control
Romans 6:13; Galatians 5:25

Yielding Daily – Not occasional surrender
Yielding Deliberate – A conscious choice
Yielding Decisive – Grace empowers obedience
Victory is not effortβ€”it is yielding.

STABILITY – Peace That Replaces Chaos
Romans 8:6; Philippians 4:6–7

Spirit-Mind – Produces life and peace
Settled Heart – Guarded by Christ’s peace
Steady Walk – Rooted, not restless
Spirit-led believers are anchored, not anxious.

SHOWING – Fruit Reveals the Root
Matthew 7:16; Galatians 5:22

Love Seen – Selfless concern for others
Joy Seen – Independent of circumstances
Temperance Seen – Controlled, not compulsive
Fruit does not make us savedβ€”it proves growth.

SEPARATION – Choosing Which Life to Feed

Romans 12:1–2; Colossians 2:6–7

Flesh Starved – By denying sinful appetites
Spirit Strengthened – By renewing the mind
Service Sustained – By walking in grace
Feeding determines becoming.

CONCLUSION

Every believer lives between two treesβ€”one barren, one fruitful. The difference is not salvation, but submission. The flesh produces emptiness; the Spirit produces abundance. What you feed today shapes who you become tomorrow.

CALL TO ACTION

Galatians 5:16 (KJV)
