IS JUDAS ISCARIOT SAVED?

John 17:12; Matthew 27:3–5; Acts 1:25

INTRODUCTION

Few questions trouble Bible students more than this one:
β€œJudas walked with Jesusβ€”so was he saved?”
Emotion, tradition, and assumption often cloud the answer.

But Scriptureβ€”rightly divided (2 Timothy 2:15)β€”gives a clear, sober, and consistent testimony.
Today, we will let the Bible speak, not sentiment.

PREDICTED BETRAYAL
John 6:70–71
Truth: Judas’ betrayal was foreknown, not accidental.

A. Chosen as a Disciple – One of the Twelve outwardly
B. Known as a Betrayer – β€œOne of you is a devil”
C. Foretold by Christ – No surprise to Jesus
Dispensational Insight:
Foreknowledge does not equal salvation; office β‰  faith.

PERSONAL CHARACTER
John 12:4–6
Truth: Judas’ heart revealed unbelief long before betrayal.

A. Covetous Heart – Lover of money
B. Crooked Handling – Stole from the bag
C. Cold Conscience – No repentance shown
Dispensational Insight:
True believers are changed inwardly, not merely positioned outwardly.

PROPHETIC FULFILLMENT
Psalm 41:9; John 13:18
Truth: Judas fulfilled prophecy as the betrayer.

A. Scripture Must Be Fulfilled – God’s Word stands
B. Role Foretold – β€œMine own familiar friend”
C. Ruin Predicted – Betrayal leads to judgment
Dispensational Insight:
Prophetic fulfillment does not override personal responsibility.

POSSESSION BY SATAN
John 13:27
Truth: Judas was indwelt by Satan, not the Spirit.

A. Satan Entered In – Clear biblical statement
B. Spirit Not Indwelling – No regeneration evidence
C. Darkness Fully Embraced – Final rejection
Dispensational Insight:
Believers in any dispensation are never possessed by Satan.

PRONOUNCED LOST
John 17:12
Truth: Jesus Himself declared Judas lost.

A. β€œSon of Perdition” – Title of destruction
B. Not Kept by Christ – Unlike true believers
C. Exception Stated Clearly – β€œNone… but the son of perdition”
Dispensational Insight:
Christ never calls a saved man β€œlost.”

PENITENCE WITHOUT REPENTANCE
Matthew 27:3–5
Truth: Judas felt remorse, not saving repentance.

A. Sorrow Acknowledged – β€œHe repented himself” (regret)
B. Sin Confessed to Men – Not to God
C. Suicide Chosen – Despair, not faith
Dispensational Insight:
Worldly sorrow is not godly repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10).

PLACE APPOINTED
Acts 1:25
Truth: Judas went to his own place.

A. Apostolic Replacement Needed – Lost his office
B. Separation from Ministry – Fell by transgression
C. Destination Implied – A place prepared for him
Dispensational Insight:
The language sharply contrasts the hope of believers.

PLAN OF REDEMPTION
Matthew 26:24
Truth: It would have been better if Judas had never been born.

A. Severe Statement – Spoken by Christ
B. Eternal Consequence – Worse than temporal death
C. No Hope Mentioned – Unlike fallen believers
Dispensational Insight:
This statement is never used of saved men.

PRINCIPLE FOR TODAY
Romans 10:9–10
Truth: Proximity to Jesus is not the same as faith in Jesus.

A. Association Does Not Save – Judas walked with Christ
B. Ministry Does Not Save – Judas preached and served
C. Faith Alone Saves – Trust in the finished work
Dispensational Insight:
Salvation today comes only through believing the gospel of grace (1 Corinthians 15:1–4).

CONCLUSION

Judas was:
Chosen to an officeβ€”but never regenerated
Close to Christβ€”but never converted
Used in prophecyβ€”but never saved
The Bible is clear: Judas Iscariot died lost.
This warns us that religion without faith is deadly.
