THE LOVE OF MONEY: THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL

1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV)
β€œFor the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

INTRODUCTION

Money itself is not evilβ€”but the love of money is deadly. In this Dispensation of Grace, God warns the Body of Christ not against possessions, but against priorities. When money becomes the master, Christ is displaced, and destruction follows.

Paul, writing to Timothy, exposes the spiritual danger of misplaced affectionβ€”not for Israel under the Law, but for believers today under grace (Ephesians 3:2).

Today we will examine 9 DISPENSATIONAL WARNINGS about the LOVE of money, and how grace teaches us to live free from its bondage.

A. Love, Not Loot – Money is neutral; affection is the issue
Matthew 6:21
B. Root, Not Fruit – Evil grows from misplaced desire

C. Heart, Not Hands – The issue is what controls you
Luke 16:13
Dispensational Insight:
Paul addresses inner motivation, not external law-keeping.

A. False Security – Wealth promises safety it cannot give
Proverbs 11:28
B. Fleshly Confidence – Trust shifts from God to gold
Jeremiah 17:5
C. Spiritual Blindness – Riches dull eternal vision
Mark 4:19
Dispensational Insight:
Grace teaches dependence on Christ, not cash.

DESTRUCTION OF CONTENTMENT
1 Timothy 6:6

A. Dissatisfaction Grows – Enough is never enough
Ecclesiastes 5:10
B. Comparison Kills Joy – Coveting breeds misery
Galatians 6:4
C. Peace is Lost – Contentment disappears
Philippians 4:11
Dispensational Insight:
Contentment is a grace virtue, not a financial condition.

DOMINATION OF THE FLESH
Romans 6:12

A. Enslaving Desire – Money becomes a master
Romans 6:16
B. Carnal Decisions – Choices driven by profit, not principle
James 1:14–15
C. Spiritual Weakness – Flesh grows, faith shrinks
Galatians 5:17
Dispensational Insight:
Believers are free in Christβ€”but can still be entangled.

DEPARTURE FROM GODLINESS
1 Timothy 6:3

A. Godliness Redefined – Gain replaces godly living
2 Timothy 3:2
B. Worship Corrupted – Mammon rivals God
Matthew 6:24
C. Priorities Reversed – Earth over eternity
Colossians 3:2
Dispensational Insight:
Grace points upwardβ€”to heavenly calling, not earthly gain.

DEBT OF SELF-PIERCING SORROW

A. Self-Inflicted Pain – Greed wounds the soul
Proverbs 13:15
B. Broken Relationships – Money divides families
Proverbs 15:27

B. Use Wealth Wisely – As stewards, not owners
1 Corinthians 4:2
C. Lay Hold on Eternal Life – Live for what lasts
Colossians 3:23–24
Dispensational Insight:
The believer’s reward is future-focused, not money-centered.

CONCLUSION

Money is a tool, not a throne. When loved, it enslaves. When submitted to Christ, it serves. The danger is not possessionβ€”but affection. In this age of grace, God calls the Body of Christ to live free, think eternally, and treasure Christ above all.
