WHAT SAVES vs. WHAT DOESN’T

(Understanding the Difference Matters)
1 Corinthians 15:1–4; Ephesians 2:8–9

INTRODUCTION

Confusion about salvation is not a small issueβ€”it is an eternal one. Many sincerely believe that good works, religious rituals, or church involvement contribute to salvation. But rightly divided Scripture reveals a sharp contrast between what saves and what does not (2 Timothy 2:15).

Today, we will clearly divide WHAT SAVES vs. WHAT DOESN’T, according to Pauline revelation for the Body of Christ.

PROVISION β€” Christ Alone Saves
Romans 3:24; 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

A. Perfect Sacrifice – Christ fully paid sin’s debt
Hebrews 10:12
B. Finished Crosswork – Nothing left to add
John 19:30
C. Free Gift – Salvation is received, not achieved
Romans 6:23
Dispensational Insight: Salvation today is grounded solely in Christ’s completed work, not ongoing performance.

PERSON β€” Jesus Alone Saves
Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5

A. One Savior – No substitutes
Titus 3:6
B. One Mediator – No priests or systems
1 Timothy 2:5
C. One Sufficiency – Christ is enough
Colossians 2:10
Dispensational Insight: The Church is saved by a Person, not a process.

PROMISE β€” Salvation Is by Grace
Ephesians 2:8–9

A. Grace Given – Unearned favor
Romans 11:6
B. Grace Guarded – Not mixed with works
Galatians 2:21
C. Grace Glorified – God gets all the glory
Ephesians 1:6
Dispensational Insight: Grace and works cannot coexist in justification.

PERSUASION β€” Faith Alone Receives
Romans 4:5

A. Belief, Not Behavior – Faith rests
John 6:28–29
B. Trust, Not Try – Confidence in Christ
Philippians 3:9
C. Rest, Not Ritual – Faith ceases striving
Hebrews 4:10
Dispensational Insight: Faith is the hand that receives, not the work that earns.

PERFORMANCE β€” Good Works Do Not Save
Romans 3:20; Titus 3:5

A. Law Cannot Justify – It only condemns
Galatians 3:10
B. Works Cannot Cleanse – Sin requires blood
Hebrews 9:22
C. Deeds Cannot Redeem – Only Christ can
Romans 4:2
Dispensational Insight: Works follow salvationβ€”they never form it.

PRACTICES β€” Religious Acts Do Not Save

Colossians 2:16; 1 Corinthians 1:17

A. Baptism Does Not Save – Christ’s gospel does
1 Corinthians 15:1–4
B. Church Attendance Does Not Save – Faith does
Romans 10:9–10
C. Praying Does Not Save – Believing does
Romans 4:5
Dispensational Insight: Rituals belong to religion; salvation belongs to grace.

POSITION β€” The Believer Is Secure
Ephesians 1:13–14

A. Sealed by the Spirit – Permanent security
Ephesians 4:30
B. Placed in Christ – New standing
1 Corinthians 12:13
C. Safe Forever – No condemnation
Romans 8:1
Dispensational Insight: Salvation is a position, not a probation.

PURPOSE β€” Good Works Follow Salvation
Ephesians 2:10

A. Works Prepared – God-designed service
Titus 3:8
B. Works Powered – By grace, not flesh
1 Corinthians 15:10
C. Works Praising God – Not earning favor
Matthew 5:16
Dispensational Insight: Works are the result, never the root.

PERSPECTIVE β€” Rest in What Christ Has Done
Colossians 2:6–7

A. Rest from Striving – No fear of failure
Hebrews 10:14
B. Rest in Assurance – Confidence before God
Romans 5:1
C. Rest in Grace – Standing firm
Galatians 5:1
Dispensational Insight: Grace teaches us to rest, not to run on a treadmill of effort.

CONCLUSION

Salvation is not about what you do for God, but about what Christ has already done for you.

WHAT SAVES:
Jesus Alone
His Finished Crosswork
Faith in the Gospel
WHAT DOESN’T:
Good works
Baptism
Church attendance
Prayer as a means of salvation
β€œBut to him that worketh not, but believeth…” β€” Romans 4:5
