TWO CROWNS
(From Thorns to Throne)
INTRODUCTION
The image before us powerfully portrays two crowns upon the same PersonβJesus Christ.
One crown speaks of suffering, the other of sovereignty.
Rightly dividing the Word of Truth (2 Tim 2:15), we understand that Christ first came to suffer, and He will come again to reign. Confusing these two leads to doctrinal error, especially concerning Israel, the Church, and the Kingdom.
The Crown of Thorns β His Pain
Matthew 27:29
Piercing Mockery β The crown was placed in ridicule, not reverence
Prophetic Meaning β Fulfilled Isaiah 53:3 (suffering Messiah)
Penal Substitute β He bore the curse for sinners (Gal 3:13)
Dispensational Truth: This suffering occurred before the Kingdom was postponed.
The Crown of Thorns β His Poverty
2 Corinthians 8:9
Voluntary Humbling β He laid aside glory (Phil 2:6β8)
Visible Weakness β No throne, no army, no earthly crown
Vicarious Sacrifice β He became poor to enrich sinners spiritually
Christ suffered first; glory comes later.
The Crown of Thorns β His Purpose
Hebrews 2:9
Redemptive Suffering β βThat He by the grace of God should taste deathβ
Required Suffering β Blood before blessing (Heb 9:22)
Rejected Messiah β Israel rejected Him at His first coming (John 1:11)
The Kingdom was offered, rejected, and postponed.
The Crown of Glory β His Position
Revelation 19:12
Royal Authority β βMany crownsβ upon His head
Righteous Rule β No mockery, only majesty
Reigning Redeemer β The Lamb becomes the Lion
This is future, literal, and earthly.
The Crown of Glory β His Power
Psalm 2:6β9
Absolute Rule β He reigns with a rod of iron
Authorized Kingship β Appointed by the Father
Acknowledged Supremacy β Every knee shall bow (Phil 2:10)
This is the Millennial Kingdom, not the Church Age.
The Crown of Glory β His Promises
Luke 1:32β33
Davidic Throne β Literal throne in Jerusalem
National Restoration β Israel restored as a nation (Rom 11:26)
Never-ending Kingdom β Eternal reign after the Millennium
God keeps His promisesβto Israel and to Christ.
The Contrast of Crowns β Then and Now
1 Peter 1:11
Sufferings First β Crown of thorns
Splendor Later β Crown of glory
Sequential Plan β Godβs prophetic order matters
Mixing the crowns confuses prophecy.
The Churchβs Crown β Todayβs Calling
2 Timothy 4:8
Crown of Righteousness β For Church Age believers
Heavenly Reward β Not earthly rule yet
Grace Dispensation β Salvation by grace alone (Eph 2:8β9)
We reign with Him later, not now.
The Choice of Crowns β Personal Response
Hebrews 12:2
Reject Him Now β Face judgment later
Receive Him Now β Share His glory later
Rightly Believe β Trust the finished work (1 Cor 15:1β4)
You must decide which crown you recognize today.
CALL TO ACTION
Believe the Gospel β Christ died, was buried, and rose again (1 Cor 15:1β4)
Rightly Divide the Word β Donβt confuse suffering with reigning
Look for His Appearing β Not the kingdom yet, but the Rapture first (Titus 2:13)
CONCLUSION
Jesus wore the crown of thorns so He could one day wear the crown of glory.
Today is the day of grace, not the day of wrath or the kingdom.
The Church proclaims His cross, not His throneβyet.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Thorns speak of redemption
Crowns speak of reign
Grace precedes government
Faith comes before force
The Cross comes before the CrownΒ
βFrom suffering to sovereigntyβJesus Christ is Lord.β
