TITHING REMOVES THE CURSE OF POVERTY?

INTRODUCTION

In the Dispensation of Grace, doctrine must be drawn primarily from the apostle Paul, who was given the revelation of the mystery for the Body of Christ (Rom. 16:25; Eph. 3:1–9).

One of the most widespread errors today is the teaching that tithing removes the curse of povertyβ€”a doctrine rooted in Israel’s Law, not in Pauline grace truth.

Today, we will rightly divide this issue and expose why tithing-for-blessing teaching is false doctrine for the Church Age.

> β€œStudy to shew thyself approved unto God… rightly dividing the word of truth.” β€” 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

FALSE TITHING DOCTRINE EXPOSED

β‘  THE PROVISIONAL PURPOSE OF TITHING

Malachi 3:8–10; Leviticus 27:30

A. Patriarchal Practice – Tithing existed before the Law, but was voluntary (Gen. 14:18–20).

B. Mosaic Mandate – Under the Law, tithing was commanded, not optional (Lev. 27:34).

C. Priestly Provision – Tithes supported the Levitical priesthood, not churches (Num. 18:21).

Tithing belonged to Israel under the Law, not the Body of Christ.

β‘‘ THE CURSE-CONDITIONAL SYSTEM

Deuteronomy 28:1–15; Galatians 3:10

A. Conditional Blessings – Blessings depended on obedience to the Law.

B. Cursed Consequences – Failure brought curses, including poverty (Deut. 28:15).

C. Covenant Context – These promises were tied to Israel’s covenant, not grace.

Poverty curses apply to Law, not Grace.

β‘’ THE CROSS-CANCELLED CURSE

Galatians 3:13; Colossians 2:14

A. Curse Carried – Christ bore the curse of the Law.

B. Law Lifted – The Law was nailed to the cross.

C. Condemnation Cancelled – No believer is under a curse today.

You cannot remove a curse that no longer exists.

β‘£ THE PAULINE PATTERN OF GIVING

2 Corinthians 8–9

A. Grace-Based Giving – Giving flows from grace, not fear (2 Cor. 8:9).

B. Willing Giving – Not commanded, but cheerful (2 Cor. 9:7).

C. Proportionate Giving – As God prospers, not a fixed percentage (1 Cor. 16:2).

Paul never commands tithing.

β‘€ THE PROSPERITY PERVERSION

1 Timothy 6:5–9

A. False Motive – Using godliness as a means of gain.

B. Fleshly Message – Focus on money, not Christ.

C. Faith Exploitation – Fear-driven giving replaces faith-rest.

Prosperity preaching corrupts grace.

β‘₯ THE MISPLACED MALACHI MESSAGE

Malachi 3:8–10; Romans 15:4

A. Wrong People – Written to Israel, not the Church.

B. Wrong Priesthood – Addressed to Levites, not pastors.

C. Wrong Period – Pre-Cross, under Law.

Application without right division equals error.

⑦ THE LIBERTY-LAW OF THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:2; Galatians 5:18

A. Not Under Moses – Believers are not under the Law.

B. Led by the Spirit – Giving flows from love, not obligation.

C. Freedom to Give – Grace liberates generosity.

Grace motivates more than fear ever could.

⑧ THE SUPPORT OF SERVANTS—NOT TITHES

1 Corinthians 9:9–14; 1 Timothy 5:17–18

A. Ministerial Support – Workers may be supported.

B. Voluntary Supply – Support is given freely.

C. No Percentage Prescribed – No 10% command exists.

Support β‰  tithing.

⑨ THE RIGHT DIVISION PRINCIPLE

2 Timothy 2:15; Ephesians 3:2

A. Law vs. Grace – Distinct dispensations.

B. Israel vs. Church – Different programs.

C. Works vs. Faith – Grace excludes compulsion.

Error enters when Scripture is not rightly divided.

CONCLUSION

Tithing to remove poverty is a Law-based doctrine wrongly imposed on Grace-age believers.

Christ already dealt with the curse.

The believer givesβ€”not to be blessedβ€”but because he already is blessed.

> β€œBlessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” β€” Ephesians 1:3
